Curious? We've got Answers!
How to Choose the Right Hammock Size?
Most Mexican hammocks measure about 3.5 meters (11.5 ft) in total length. To hang your hammock properly, you’ll need two anchor points about 3 to 4 meters apart and installed at an approximate height of 1.8 m (6 ft).
Mexican hammocks are usually available in three sizes:
Single Hammock
Suitable for one person and perfect for quick naps, but it offers less space and comfort than larger sizes.
Double Hammock
Our most recommended size. It provides extra space and comfort for one person and can also fit two people or a parent with a child.
Family Size Hammock
Extra wide and incredibly comfortable. Perfect for two people to relax with plenty of space, or even three people lounging together.
How Much Weight Can a Hammock Support?
Thanks to their fine handwoven technique, Mayan hammocks are extremely strong and durable. Depending on the model and size, they can typically support between 200 and 300 kg (440–660 lbs).
Just make sure your anchors, hooks, and hanging system are strong and properly installed, as these are the most important elements for ensuring safety.
What Are Mexican Hammocks Made Of?
Traditional Mexican hammocks from the Yucatán Peninsula are typically made from two materials: cotton and nylon. Each material has its own advantages depending on how and where you plan to use your hammock.
Cotton Hammocks
Cotton is a natural fiber that gives the hammock a soft touch and a charming aunthentic look. Cotton hammocks are very comfortable, but they absorb water easily and can take longer to dry if left in the rain. They are also slightly less resistant over time than nylon hammocks. With proper care, however, a cotton hammock can last for many years.
Nylon Hammocks
Although nylon is not a natural fiber, must Mayan families today traditionally sleep in nylon hammocks because they are extremely durable. Nylon thread is surprisingly soft, breathable, and comfortable, while also being more resistant to sun and rain. This makes nylon hammocks a great choice as an outdoor hammock or backyard hammock.
For maximum longevity, we still recommend bringing your hammock inside during winter or long periods of bad weather.
What’s the best position to enjoy a hammock?
When your hammock is properly set up, you can relax in several positions. Lying in a curved “banana” shape is perfect for a quick nap or reading. However, for deeper rest, we recommend lying diagonally across the hammock. This position provides better balance, a flatter surface, and optimal weight distribution, making it much more comfortable for your back.
For the best experience, we recommend choosing a double hammock, which gives you enough space to lie diagonally and fully relax.
Where can I hang a hammock?
To properly hang your hammock, you’ll need two anchor points approximately 1.8 meters (6 ft) high and about 3–4 meters (10–13 ft) apart. These supports must be strong enough to hold at least 300 kg (660 lbs).
For a balcony hammock or decorative boho setup inside your home, solid walls or columns are ideal—simply install secure wall anchors or metal hooks.
For a garden or backyard hammock, you can use trees, a hammock stand, or install wooden posts to create the perfect outdoor relaxation spot.
For safety and comfort, make sure the lowest part of the hammock hangs no more than 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) above the ground.
